TAXOCON 2024

Trivandrum: The recently concluded TAXOCON 2024, a collaborative effort by Travancore Nature History Society Trivandrum, the University of Kerala, INTREC Trivandrum, and the Kerala State Biodiversity Board, marked a significant exploration into the world of invertebrate taxonomy. This three-day conference, held in Trivandrum, aimed to unravel the mysteries of invertebrates, delving into their taxonomy, classification, and ecological significance.

The workshop, tailored for amateurs, enthusiasts, researchers, and students, offered an immersive experience through diverse sessions. Esteemed speakers covered a broad spectrum of topics, ranging from foundational principles of taxonomy to cutting-edge techniques of molecular and integrative taxonomy. Key sessions were handled by experts in the field like Dr. Sureshan PM Scientist (Emeritus) in ZSI, Western Ghat Regional Centre, Calicut., Dr. KD Prathapan Associate Professor at the Department of Entomology, College of Agriculture, Kerala Agricultural University, Dr. A. Biju Kumar Professor and Head of the Department of Aquatic Biology & Fisheries, University of Kerala, Dr. Rajeev Raghavan Assistant Professor at the Kerala University of Fisheries and Ocean Studies (KUFOS) in Kochi, Dr. Smrithy Raj, Dr Aneesh PT Assistant Professor at Hiroshima University, Dr. Kalesh Sadasivan, Mr. Vinayan P Nair, Mr. Mahesh R, and Mr. Manoj K, Research Associates TNHS, Trivandrum.

The programme included Introduction to Taxonomy– A comprehensive overview tracing the historical development of taxonomy and its pivotal role in biological sciences. Taxonomic Practices and Ethics–Participants were introduced to the basics and ethical practices associated with taxonomy, laying the groundwork for subsequent sessions. Molecular & Integrative Taxonomy– A highlight session showcasing contemporary approaches that bridge traditional taxonomy with molecular techniques, offering practical knowledge through case studies. Taxonomy of Various Groups–Exploration of diverse groups including mantids, parasitic crustaceans, butterflies, moths, beetles, odonates, cicadas, ants, freshwater crabs, and aquatic insects. Participants gained valuable insights into the identification, behaviour, and ecological roles of invertebrates, contributing to their understanding of these fascinating organisms. Macrophotography in Research The program concluded with a session emphasizing the importance of macro photography as a tool for documentation and research in the field of invertebrate taxonomy. The workshop extended an open invitation to all nature enthusiasts, from beginners to seasoned researchers, fostering a collaborative learning experience. Attendees were encouraged to share insights, connect with fellow enthusiasts, and deepen their understanding of the essential components of biodiversity.

TAXOCON 2024 was a successful journey into the intricate science of invertebrate taxonomy. By combining theoretical knowledge with practical insights, the conference provided a platform for passionate individuals to explore, learn, and contribute to the conservation of these often-overlooked contributors to our ecosystems.
